UPMC Medical Education Program

The UPMC Combined Anesthesiology-Pediatrics Residency is a five-year program offered by the University of Pittsburgh's Departments of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine. This program is designed for applicants who are committed to pediatric care while acquiring a robust foundation in anesthesiology. Upon completion, residents are eligible for board certification in both general pediatrics and general anesthesiology, which positions them favorably for subsequent subspecialty training. The second year transitions into the first-year anesthesiology residency, with core rotations encompassing Basic Anesthesiology, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Pediatric Anesthesiology Preoperative Clinic. During this time, residents maintain continuity with monthly pediatric clinics, participating in both well-child exams and acute illness evaluations.

The remaining years of the residency program consist of advanced subspecialty rotations and elective opportunities, facilitating experiential learning while alternating between pediatrics and anesthesiology every three months. Throughout, residents will continue to attend didactic sessions pertinent to both anesthesiology and pediatrics.

Application Process

Both the pediatric and anesthesiology programs are ACGME accredited, and the combined residency is recognized by the American boards of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology. Candidates are selected through the NRMP match system. Applications are accepted via the traditional ERAS system, making it straightforward for applicants to submit their credentials and align their qualifications with program requirements.
