The fellowship integrates direct patient care with strong educational components aimed at guiding fellows through the challenges and expectations of becoming successful consultant physicians. The program is structured to facilitate individual career trajectories towards board certification and evidence-based practice in critical care.
Training Facilities
Vanderbilt University Medical Center serves as the tertiary referral center and a Level I trauma facility not only for Nashville but also for a broad catchment area extending through Middle Tennessee and into surrounding states. The medical center's critical care units include a:

Rotations and Responsibilities
The core rotations encompassed within the fellowship include experiences in CVICU, SICU, NCU, Burn ICU, alongside an ECHO/Ultrasound rotation. Fellows are also invited to select elective months that cater to their interests. Available electives encompass intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), medical icu (MICU), pediatric icu (PICU), and palliative care, as well as varied medical subspecialties including nephrology, infectious diseases, and cardiology. Additionally, participation in the Vanderbilt International Anesthesiology (VIA) program provides fellows the opportunity to serve in underserved countries, enriching their clinical experience with a global perspective.
Fellows have key responsibilities in the ICU, which consist of leading educational rounds, developing comprehensive care plans, and facilitating communication among multidisciplinary teams, including surgical services, consultative teams, and patient families. They are also responsible for mentoring and teaching residents, medical students, and nursing staff through various platforms such as journal clubs, conference presentations, and simulation workshops.
Curriculum
The educational curriculum features daily didactic sessions that prioritize high-yield lecture topics, research conferences, and quality improvement training. Additionally, fellows have the opportunity to join trauma surgical critical care fellows in a structured 'boot camp' during the first month. Essential training in transthoracic echocardiography is provided, ensuring that fellows achieve proficiency in ultrasound applications critical in intensive care settings. Ongoing monthly simulation training is held at the Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA).
Research Opportunities
The program encourages fellows with academic interests to utilize elective time to engage in clinical or basic science investigations and to contribute toward advancing the field through presentations at national conferences. The department actively supports a research-focused environment, ensuring that fellows can find their niche in either clinical care or academia.
Application and Competitiveness
The program participates in the San Francisco Match system, assessing applications holistically. There is an overarching commitment to recruiting candidates across various medical backgrounds, making it open to Anesthesia Residents, Emergency Medicine Residents, and PGY3 Surgery Residents. Special application requirements include eligibility from relevant medical specialties, and typically, candidates must be graduates from accredited medical school programs. Acceptance involves consideration of unique experiences and qualities pertinent to the program's mission of fostering clinical excellence and academic prowess.
Visa Sponsorship
The program is supportive of international applicants and can sponsor J-1 visas for fellows. This opens doors for a diverse cohort of fellows, enhancing the learning environment through varied perspectives and practices in critical care medicine.
Competitiveness
Vanderbilt's Critical Care Medicine fellowship is regarded as highly competitive, integrating high standards of training with expansive clinical exposure, ensuring that fellows are well-prepared for board certification examinations and for future roles in either academic or clinical settings.
