Albany Med Health System Program

The Albany Medical Center Hematopathology Fellowship is a comprehensive one-year program designed to prepare fellows for subspecialty board certification in hematopathology. It combines in-depth training in various facets of hematopathology including morphologic analysis, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics, and molecular diagnostic techniques. This fellowship is strategically placed within one of New York State's largest teaching hospitals, which enhances the clinical experience through direct exposure to a wide array of hematolymphoid disorders.

Case material for the fellowship comes from the Albany Medical Center and the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center, along with consultation cases from regional hospitals. This variety not only enriches the training experience but also ensures that fellows are well-equipped to function as integral members of multidisciplinary teams in hematopathology upon completion of the program.

Curriculum

The curriculum of the Hematopathology Fellowship is meticulously structured, encompassing several key rotations:

Hematopathology Lymph Node/Bone Marrow Service

This rotation provides hands-on experience in diagnosing hematolymphoid malignancies, including the performance of bone marrow biopsies and aspirations. Fellows engage in all aspects of specimen handling, preparation for histology, and ancillary studies while receiving mentorship from attending hematopathologists.

Hematology Coagulation

Fellows gain substantial knowledge in laboratory hematology, focusing on the evaluation of blood smears and bone marrow aspirates, along with conducting laboratory tests such as serum protein electrophoresis.

Cytogenetics

This rotation involves comprehensive training in cytogenetic techniques, including chromosome banding and hybization methods used in clinical applications. This exposure equips fellows with the knowledge needed for effective laboratory diagnostics.

Flow Cytometry

In the flow cytometry rotation, fellows learn to operate laboratory instruments, analyze and report results, and engage in quality control processes. Practical experience is emphasized to enhance understanding of flow cytometric techniques used in lymphomas and leukemias.

Molecular Diagnostics

This part of the curriculum focuses on the principles of molecular pathology including DNA extraction, PCR, and other critical techniques. Fellows also participate in research activities to advance the understanding of molecular biomarkers in hematological disorders.

Research Initiatives

The fellowship emphasizes research, particularly in the area of large cell lymphomas, with a focus on cell cycle pathways and novel therapeutic targets. Fellows have access to a robust database of well-characterized diffuse large B cell lymphomas for research purposes and are encouraged to engage in collaborative research efforts.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Hematopathology Fellowship, candidates must be board-eligible or board-certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. The application process includes submission of a Standardized Application for Pathology Fellowships, a curriculum vitae, USMLE Step scores, and three letters of recommendation. It's noteworthy that the program only accepts U.S. citizens and permanent residents, or candidates qualifying for a J-1 visa, as the institution does not sponsor H-1 visas.
