1524814003The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine – Baylor Scott & White (BSW) is a one-year program located in Round Rock, Texas. This fellowship focuses on preparing cardiologists for an independent practice in interventional cardiology.
This program allows one fellow per year to enter into intensive clinical training, which includes both coronary and peripheral interventional procedures alongside exposure to a spectrum of structural heart procedures. The training encompasses a longitudinal Interventional Cardiology Clinic and provides a solid foundation for passing the examination of the American Board of Cardiology.
Curriculum
The fellowship curriculum is designed to equip the fellow with comprehensive clinical experience necessary for successful practice in the field of interventional cardiology. The fellow will gain knowledge, judgment, and technical skills essential for performing interventional procedures. Specific training for structural heart procedures such as Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR), Mitral and Tricuspid Valve repairs, as well as closure of Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) and Atrial Septal Defects (ASD)/Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO) is available based on individual interests.
The hospitals involved, Round Rock and Lakeway, conduct more than 1300 diagnostic coronary angiograms and over 600 coronary interventions per year, ensuring a robust case load for the fellow’s training. Advanced percutaneous intervention modalities utilized include balloon angioplasty, intravascular ultrasound, and various other techniques pertinent to both coronary and peripheral interventions.

The curriculum encompasses various aspects of interventional cardiology, including:
- Patient selection
- Pharmacologic interventions
- Coronary and big artery vascular interventions
- Intracardiac procedures
- Evaluation of interventional techniques
- Pathology conference participation
Fellows are expected to participate in weekly instruction and are required to present on selected topics throughout the year. They are also involved in outpatient post-intervention care during a weekly continuity clinic, sharpening their clinical acumen in real-world scenarios.
