Detroit Medical Center Program

The Urology Residency Program at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) is a comprehensive training program designed to foster the development of future urologists. The program consists of a dedicated faculty of 14 ACGME-accredited urologists, numerous affiliated attending urologists, 15 residents, and other staff to create a robust learning environment.

Curriculum and Rotations

The training curriculum is designed to provide residents with a balanced experience across urologic specialties. Residents participate in rotations through several DMC hospitals and St. Joseph Oakland Mercy Hospital. This rotation schedule includes exposure to a wide variety of urology cases, including those involving female incontinence, andrology, pediatrics, and trauma care.

Residents receive hands-on training in robotic surgery utilizing advanced equipment such as the DaVinci Si™ and DaVinci Xi™ surgical systems. They work directly with faculty to treat a spectrum of urologic conditions, enhancing both their technical skills and clinical judgment. Rotations are complemented by a robust didactic schedule that includes weekly Grand Rounds, monthly Tumor Boards, and Journal Clubs. Throughout the year, residents are encouraged to present at national and international meetings like the AUA Annual Meeting, adding to their academic profiles.

Research Opportunities

The DMC Urology Residency Program strongly emphasizes research. Residents are supported by a full-time research assistant and have access to medical writers and biostatisticians. They participate in various quality improvement and clinical research projects, presenting findings at national meetings, which is pivotal in their training and career development.

This multi-site training facility allows residents to gain extensive experience across various urologic conditions and practice settings.

Application Process

Interested applicants must use the ERAS application process. The program requires the following components:

• ERAS Application
• Three letters of recommendation
• Completion of at least the first part of board exams (Comlex 1 or USMLE Step 1)

DMC is open to both DO and MD applicants. It is recommended that prospective residents undertake a rotation in the department, providing invaluable insight into their capabilities while allowing the faculty to assess the strengths of potential candidates.

Visa Support

For international medical graduates, the DMC offers visa support, primarily for J-1 visas. Candidates must be ECFMG certified to be eligible for the program. Non-ECFMG certified candidates should refrain from applying.

Competitiveness and Selection Criteria

The Urology Residency Program at DMC is highly competitive, with around 260 applicants for only three resident positions each year. Selection for interviews is based on a holistic review of applications, including CV quality, prior research experience, letters of recommendation, performance in medical school, and examination results on COMLEX and/or USMLE.

Unique Aspects of the Program

One of the unique features of the urology residency at DMC is the exposure to diverse urology sub-specialties, including pediatric urology at the nationally recognized Children’s Hospital of Michigan and reconstructive urology, where residents learn from some of the top specialists in the field. Additionally, the emphasis on both clinical experience and research prepares residents for excellence whether they choose to enter private practice or pursue further fellowship training.
