Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Program

The Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University Ophthalmology Residency Program at the Kresge Eye Institute is a large metropolitan-based program dedicated to providing primary and subspecialty ophthalmic care to the underserved population in Detroit. Residents benefit from a busy adult resident clinic that performs numerous anterior segment procedures, exposure to a large pediatric population at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan, and rotations at the John Dingell VA Hospital, offering experiences with numerous anterior segment procedures.

The program is structured as a 36-month curriculum, providing a broad foundation in all subspecialties of ophthalmology. With a team of fellowship-trained ophthalmologists in each subspecialty area serving as full-time faculty, residents receive hands-on training and excellent mentorship throughout their training. The program accepts 7 residents each year.

Residents have the opportunity to complete 7 rotations annually, rotating with faculty across subspecialties. An elective rotation in the PGY4 year allows residents to tailor their learning experience to their specific interests, including travel for cataract surgeries, shadowing at local practices, or engaging in research projects.

The program also offers an Integrated Program starting from the PGY1 year for those keen on a complete post-graduate training experience at Kresge. Rotations occur at various medical facilities within Detroit, including Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital, and more.

Research opportunities are abundant at Wayne State University School of Medicine's Department of Ophthalmology, which ranks highly in NIH Research Funding. Residents engage with clinical and basic science researchers, present projects at the Annual Clinical Conference, and receive funding to attend ophthalmology conferences.

The residency emphasizes education with structured didactic sessions, weekly reading sessions, virtual conferences, and a microsurgery course. Residents have access to advanced surgical simulators and a microsurgery lab for hands-on experience before operating.
