Corewell Health (Taylor) Program

The Ophthalmology Residency at Corewell Health Taylor Hospital offers a comprehensive, fully accredited three-year program, allowing residents to achieve eligibility for certification by the AOBOO-HNS. This program is academically connected to prominent institutions including Michigan State University and Children's Hospital Medical Center of Akron, enhancing the training experience through a multi-institutional approach.

Each year, two residency positions are available, filled through the San Francisco Match. These positions are linked to the Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital Transitional Year internship, providing a well-rounded training experience through diverse clinical settings. Interviews are mandatory for applicant consideration and will occur annually in November and December.

Curriculum

The residency curriculum prioritizes clinical education under the guidance of experienced faculty across four distinct private practice locations in the greater Detroit area. This structure enables residents to engage with a broad patient demographic and varied ophthalmic pathologies. Residents also take charge of the Ophthalmology consult and emergency services for Corewell Health facilities located in Dearborn, Taylor, and Trenton, which further enhances exposure to critical care landscapes in both urban and suburban environments.

Throughout the training, residents gain numerous procedural skills while working in clinical settings, engaging in tasks such as intravitreal injections, laser procedures, foreign body removals, and minor oculoplastic surgeries, all under faculty supervision. The second year emphasizes experiential learning across all major ophthalmic subspecialties, allowing residents to explore fellowship interests.

Surgical training is a critical aspect of the residency, where operating room experience is progressively developed over the years. Basic surgical techniques are introduced during the transitional internship year and elaborate over the first year of residency. By the second year, residents take on greater surgical responsibilities in subspecialty rotations, enriching their hands-on surgical competence. The third year solidifies this experience, with an emphasis on cataract surgeries managed under the direct oversight of core faculty members.
