Corewell Health (Wayne) Program

Corewell Health is the new name for Beaumont, and it encompasses a comprehensive Family Medicine Residency program at Wayne Hospital that has proudly celebrated over 50 years of resident education. It holds the distinction of being the first Family Medicine residency established in Southeast Michigan, beginning its journey in 1970. The program is designed to equip residents with state-of-the-art, evidence-based training across various domains including adult, pediatric, geriatric, and obstetrical care. A hallmark of the residency is the Circle-of-Care model, which emphasizes personalized and integrated medical care.

Program Overview

The Family Medicine Residency is housed within a full-service community hospital, classified as a 200-bed facility with Level III Trauma status, which enhances the learning experience for residents by exposing them to a variety of medical scenarios. Each year, the program accepts 10 residents via the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). The affiliation with both Wayne State University School of Medicine and Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine serves to enrich the academic framework of the curriculum.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum allows residents to tailor their training to their specific interests while offering a robust foundation in community medicine. Throughout their training, residents are encouraged to engage in a diverse range of procedures, which foster a strong skill set in various aspects of family medicine. Notably, the program has introduced a new point-of-care ultrasound curriculum to enhance diagnostic capabilities.

The first year of training includes a progressive orientation to inpatient and outpatient services, with rotations covering essential aspects of Family Medicine such as pediatrics, obstetrics, geriatrics, and surgery. Residents take the lead on inpatient services, gaining valuable experience in managing patient care under faculty supervision.

Residents primarily work out of the Corewell Health Family Medicine Center in Westland, which caters to a diverse urban population. This site presents opportunities for residents to engage with various community settings, including domestic violence shelters, schools, and community health centers. Eligibility and Application Process

Applicants to the Family Medicine Residency at Corewell Health must meet specific eligibility criteria. They must be graduates of accredited LCME or AOA schools, hold valid ECFMG certification if from a foreign medical school, or possess a full and unrestricted U.S. medical license. Notably, visa sponsorships are limited to graduates of U.S. medical schools. Additionally, candidates are expected to have passed the USMLE or COMLEX exams on their first attempt, unless they have ties to the program through rotations or affiliations.5
