The Internal Medicine Residency at Corewell Health DearbornHospital offers an enriching and comprehensive training experiencefor medical graduates. Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to provide a thorough grounding inboth outpatient and inpatient medicine. A notable feature of theprogram is the "4+1" system, where residents engage in outpatientmedicine in one week periods every five weeks. This encouragesresidents to build a roster of patients they manage, therebyenhancing continuity of care, which is particularly beneficial bythe second year.

Didactic sessions form an essential part of the educationalframework. Morning reports, conducted Monday through Friday,incorporate real-time internet resources and encourage debate anddiscussion among residents. Additionally, there is an academichalf-day every Wednesday where a series of lectures and workshopstake place, allowing for concentrated learning outside of usualclinical duties.

Clinical Rotations

Residents rotate through various clinical settings, including ageneral medicine service ward that serves as the backbone ofinpatient training. The diversity of patient cases providessubstantial opportunities for research and quality improvementprojects. The program also incorporates an intensive care unit(ICU) managed by dedicated intensivists who are committed toteaching.

Research Opportunities

Research is a vital component of the residency program. CorewellHealth's clinical settings present a variety of unusual casesperfect for clinical reports and research. An emphasis is placed onthe completion of at least 10 research points throughout residency,which can be accrued through a range of research activities.

Residents regularly meet with the research director forguidance, ensuring that they receive the necessary support toengage meaningfully in their research endeavors.

Program Competitiveness and Application Process

The program is known to be competitive in its selection process.Applicants are typically expected to have graduated from anLCME-accredited medical school in the U.S. or Canada, or from anosteopathic school accredited by the AOA. Candidates must alsopossess USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 scores greater than 230, with nofailed attempts.

International medical graduates (IMGs) are also encouraged toapply, provided they have a valid ECFMG certificate and areeligible to work in the U.S. candidates may apply under a J1 visasponsorship or be U.S. citizens.

The program utilizes ERAS for application processing andparticipates fully in the NRMP. It does not offer pre-matchcontracts or consider candidates outside of the NRMP.

Visa Sponsorship

Corewell Health is open to sponsorship of J1 visas for eligibleinternational medical graduates. This allows qualified candidatesaccess to a pathway in the U.S. healthcare system upon successfulmatching into the program. Applicants should note that assurance ofa visa sponsorship is contingent upon meeting specific eligibilitycriteria set forth by the program.

Special Application Requirements

Special considerations include the requirement for three lettersof recommendation, of which one must be from the Dean of Students.Exceptionally strong candidates whose applications do not meettypical criteria may be considered if sponsored by a currentfaculty member in a meaningful capacity.
