1978400C0Corewell Health offers a Psychiatry Residency Program that strives to train residents in providing compassionate, extraordinary care to a diverse patient population. The curriculum is designed to deliver a comprehensive learning experience, focusing on the demands of contemporary psychiatric practice. This includes training in urban and suburban community hospitals, community mental health clinics, and various ambulatory settings. The program emphasizes both psychotherapy and psychopharmacology, alongside the principles of evidence-based medicine and biopsychosocial psychiatry.
The aims of the residency program include:
1. Preparing physicians for psychiatry practice by educating them in the foundational skills, knowledge, and humanistic qualities vital in psychiatric practice.
2. Developing biopsychosocial psychiatrists through a diverse array of educational experiences led by multidisciplinary faculty, enhancing their clinical knowledge in psychopathology, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, psychological development, neuroscience, and medical ethics.
3. Training residents to manage psychiatric problems prevalent in the community including depression, anxiety, trauma, psychosis, substance use, and developmental disabilities.
4. Offering progressive responsibilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings to equip residents with effective management skills.
5. Fostering lifelong learning and leadership qualities in psychiatric practice.
Clinical Rotations
The Psychiatry Residency at Corewell Health is structured to provide residents with a diverse array of clinical experiences. Given that Metro Detroit is one of the most diverse areas, residents have opportunities to train at various hospitals and clinics, offering exposure to diverse patient populations regarding demographics and diagnoses. Medical training incorporates block rotations for intensive focus on specific areas while also providing longitudinal rotations to encourage continuity of care. Additionally, residents can partake in elective rotations.
2Unique Aspects of the Program
Corewell Health's Psychiatry Residency aims to forge strong biopsychosocial psychiatrists. The program has three distinct focuses:
1. **Psychotherapy** - Residents engage extensively in psychotherapy, emphasizing psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral principles, vital for accurate assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health disorders.
2. **Developmental Disabilities** - Training addresses the significant gap in residency training concerning developmental disabilities. Given the increasing need for skilled psychiatrists in this field, residents gain unique experiences caring for this vulnerable population.
3. **Public & Community Mental Health** - The program emphasizes understanding social determinants of health and community mental health, equipping residents with skills to manage acute and chronic mental illnesses effectively.
Training Sites
Residents experience training across various sites:
1. **Beaumont Behavioral Health (BBH)** - Offers 144 inpatient psychiatric beds and other therapeutic modalities including psychopharmacology and psychotherapy.
2. **Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital** - A primary academic and referral center, providing training in consultation psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, and child/adolescent psychiatry.
3. **Corewell Health Dearborn Hospital** - Serves as a clinical campus, providing inpatient medicine and neurology training.
4. **Easterseals MORC Michigan** - Offers services for individuals with disabilities and includes outpatient psychiatry experiences focusing on developmental disabilities.
