Overview

Overview of the Psychiatry Residency Program at Akron General Medical Center

The Psychiatry Residency Program at Akron General Medical Center is a distinguished training program affiliated with the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University (CCLCM) and the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). This program is structured to provide comprehensive training in psychiatry through a combination of clinical experiences, didactic learning, and research opportunities. Rooted in a busy community hospital environment, the program integrates a strong academic foundation with practical clinical applications.

Training Sites and Clinical Rotations

The residency is conducted at the Cleveland Clinic Akron General's Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Department, which has been operational since 1956 and comprises:

  • Two acute care inpatient psychiatric units with 55 beds, handling approximately 2,000 admissions annually.
  • A Consult Liaison and Emergency Psychiatry service that conducts around 3,500 new evaluations each year.
  • A fully supervised Outpatient Resident Clinic facilitating around 22,000 visits annually.
  • A Chemical Dependency service, which manages around 1,000 outpatient and group visits, alongside two intensive outpatient programs.

This variety allows residents to gain experience across multiple psychiatric settings, fostering a well-rounded educational journey.

Curriculum and Didactic Training

The didactic curriculum of the Psychiatry Residency Program is rigorously designed and continuously updated to ensure residents receive the most current knowledge in neuropsychiatry, psychotherapeutic approaches, and socio-cultural topics within psychiatry. Residents participate in:

  • Formal lectures and seminars covering various psychiatric disorders and treatment modalities.
  • Participation in Journal Club and Grand Rounds to present clinical cases and research findings.
  • Opportunities to conduct original research and engage in scholarly activities.

Additionally, residents enjoy a supportive mentorship environment, enabling them to develop their individual educational plans aligned with their career objectives.

Research Opportunities

Research is a vital component of the residency, with structured opportunities for residents to engage in quality improvement (QI) projects, clinical research, and presentations at various conferences. The program encourages participation in both regional and national meetings, cultivating a spirit of inquiry and professional development.

Application Process and Requirements

The program offers four PGY-1 positions each year and accepts applications exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Key application requirements include:

Competitiveness and International Medical Graduates

The Psychiatry Residency Program is recognized as competitive, particularly valuing candidates who embrace diverse backgrounds. The program aims to create a balanced cohort of residents who bring unique perspectives and experiences to the training environment.1

Akron General Medical Center is committed to providing a supportive atmosphere for its residents. The program fosters work-life balance, with dedicated wellness activities and ample opportunities for self-care and professional development.
