West Virginia University Program

The West Virginia University Psychiatry Residency Training Program is dedicated to developing future leaders in healthcare through its well-structured training framework. This ACGME-accredited program equips residents with comprehensive academic and clinical skills necessary to respond effectively to diverse psychiatric needs. Upon completion, residents are eligible for board certification in Psychiatry, positioning them for various postgraduate roles, including subspecialty fellowships, private practice, academic appointments, and positions within the Veterans Administration.

Didactic sessions, such as the Psychiatry Grand Rounds and a monthly business meeting, are designed to enhance the educational experience and involve active participation in scholarly activities.1

Training Sites

Situated in a 700-bed Level 1 Trauma Center in Morgantown, the program provides residents with exposure to a diverse patient population. Training occurs at the main teaching hospital and extends to multiple system hospitals across West Virginia and in neighboring states, ensuring a rich clinical exposure that includes both elective and required rural experiences. The program also integrates with the Rockefeller Neuroscience Institute, allowing residents to access advanced clinical neuroscience training.1

Application Requirements

Applications to the program are accepted exclusively through the ERAS system and the residency selection is conducted via the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Candidates are required to have passed USMLE or COMLEX Steps 1, 2 CK, and 2 CS prior to starting the residency. International applicants must possess the appropriate J-1 visa eligibility and ECFMG certification to participate in the residency training program.2

Visa Sponsorship and Competitive Outlook

The program primarily sponsors J-1 visas for international medical graduates, offering a pathway to residency in the United States.
