The Marshall University School of Medicine offers an extensive Psychiatry Residency Program located in Huntington, West Virginia, alongside the Ohio River. The program features a dynamic college town environment with a variety of clinical settings for residents to gain a comprehensive training experience.

The Psychiatry Residency Program consists of two inter-connected branches encouraging applicants to consider applying to both. The original program accommodates 24 residents and is based entirely in Huntington, WV, where participants rotate across several clinical sites including Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Hospital, the Huntington VAMC, Mildred Mitchell Bateman State Psychiatric Hospital, Marshall Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, and River Park Hospital. A new rural track introduced in Point Pleasant, WV, aims to address unique rural psychiatric care needs and supports 16 residents in total. It's structured to allow residents to split their time between Huntington and Point Pleasant, providing a mix of urban and rural psychiatric training experiences.

Clinical exposure for residents is varied and includes rotations in neurology, internal medicine/family medicine, ER, and specialized areas such as addiction and child & adolescent psychiatry. The programs are dedicated to providing exceptional educational and clinical opportunities, underpinned by a small, friendly, and cohesive group structure. This ensures personalized attention and mentorship from the full-time faculty of the Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine.

To qualify for application, candidates should demonstrate an interest in psychiatry, possess excellent clinical skills, and have passed the USMLE or COMLEX tests preferably on the first attempt, although consideration is given to the current state of Step 2 CS and COMLEX-USA Level 2-PE Exam suspensions. Recency of graduation is considered, with preference for those who have graduated within the last three years. The program annually interviews for six positions, and applications are accepted only through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application System). J1 Visas are supported; however, H1-B visas are not accepted.

For advanced training positions (PGY2-4), potential candidates are invited to inquire about openings directly with the program. Application requirements include a Universal Application, USMLE score reports, CV, personal statement, recent letters of reference, medical school transcript, and a dean’s letter. A letter from the current training director is necessary for those already in a residency program.

Marshall's Psychiatry Residency Program offers a close-knit, supportive environment intended to foster the professional and personal growth of its residents. With a focus on both urban and rural psychiatry, it prepares residents for diverse career opportunities in the field of mental health.
