The West Virginia University Transitional Year Residency Program is designed to provide a solid foundation in basic clinical skills while offering the flexibility to explore advanced specialty interests. This program, which currently has 13 residents, maintains ACGME Continued Accreditation Status.

The curriculum of the Transitional Year Residency Program at West Virginia University includes rotations in Internal Medicine, Primary Care specialties, ICU, Selectives, Emergency Medicine, VA Ambulatory Clinic, Transitions of Care Clinic, and Electives.

Applicants must be graduates of an accredited medical school or international medical graduates with a current ECFMG certification or 5th pathway program. Additionally, applicants must have a current J-1 Visa, be a US citizen, or a permanent resident. The application process requires a Common Application Form (CAF), three letters of reference, a Personal Statement, Dean's letter, transcripts, and ECFMG certification. Virtual interviews are conducted in October, November, and December.

The residents have the opportunity to work at various clinical sites including Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center, WVU Medicine's flagship hospital J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital, and the Veterans Administration Community Based Outpatient Clinic in Westover.

Morgantown, where the majority of training occurs, is described as a beautiful University town with plentiful outdoor recreational activities and cultural events.
