West Virginia University Program

The West Virginia University (WVU) offers a 3-year, ACGME accredited Emergency Medicine Residency program founded in 1993, with a mission to provide outstanding education, departmental leadership for a dynamic curriculum, and to produce graduates competent in practicing independently in any emergency care setting. Training includes three clinical sites to prepare residents for diverse emergency care environments, incorporating hands-on experience, research opportunities, and a supportive teaching faculty. The program, which accepts 10 residents per incoming class, emphasizes medically sound education to ensure graduates can provide comprehensive care to any patient they encounter.

The curriculum offers early critical care exposure, flexible elective options across various emergency medicine subspecialties, and extensive ultrasound training. Additionally, the program features unique residency tracks in rural medicine, medical education, ultrasound, and sports medicine, providing residents with in-depth experiences and expert mentorship in their areas of interest. Didactic education covers all topics in the American Board of Emergency Medicine Model of Clinical Practice, with diverse teaching methods and interactive discussions to enhance learning.

WVU Emergency Medicine residency highlights the importance of pre-hospital medicine experiences, offering longitudinal training that includes clinical and administrative EMS experiences, as well as opportunities for mass gathering EMS coverage. Moreover, pediatric emergency medicine is integrated throughout the training, with rotations in the Pediatric ED at the WVU Medicine Children’s Hospital, ensuring residents are well-prepared to handle pediatric cases.

Research opportunities are abundant, supported by a robust research infrastructure including a Scholarship Oversight Committee that guides residents through their projects. Residents are encouraged to present their research at local, regional, national, and international conferences, with departmental support for associated costs.
