Program Overview

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital, part of the Allegheny Health Network, is a fully accredited program by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This three-year residency is designed to prepare residents for a career in emergency medicine, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to excel in this demanding field.

Curriculum Structure

The curriculum encompasses a broad range of training opportunities that include exposures to complex, high-acuity patients. Residents engage in training that develops clinical excellence while also promoting personal and professional growth. The program emphasizes critical care with rotations in various intensive care units, such as the Medical ICU, Trauma ICU, and Pediatric ICU. Each resident experiences unique aspects of emergency medicine including trauma care, acute medical emergencies, and procedures commonly performed in an emergency setting. Furthermore, the program's integration of Emergency Point-of-Care Ultrasound (ED POCUS) enhances residents' diagnostic skills.

Rotations and Clinical Experience

Residents perform rotations at Allegheny General Hospital, a Level 1 Trauma Center, and additional sites that provide diverse clinical experiences. This includes a Level 2 trauma center, a Women’s Health hospital, and specialized training at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh to ensure adequate pediatric exposure. Residents also participate in the LifeFlight program, gaining experience in advanced prehospital care.

The program actively supports research endeavors, allowing residents to engage in scholarly activities that can lead to presentations and publications. Application Requirements

Applications to the Emergency Medicine Residency are processed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), with a deadline of December 1st each year. The program accepts 12 PGY-1 positions each year through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Applicants should submit a personal statement, CV, official medical school transcript, dean’s letter, and three letters of recommendation, including at least one from an emergency medicine physician. For International Medical Graduates, additional documentation includes ECFMG certification and USMLE or COMLEX scores.

Visa Support

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is committed to supporting international applicants. The program sponsors J-1 visas, which are available for residency training for international medical graduates.
