Program Overview

The St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program operates under the umbrella of Mercy Health and offers an innovative and diverse training experience in emergency medicine. This three-year program (PGY 1, 2, 3) is designed to equip residents with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in various clinical, educational, administrative, and research scenarios within emergency medicine. The program consists of nine months of emergency medicine rotations at the well-equipped Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, which features 30 beds and accommodates 49,000 emergency department visits annually.

In addition to the core rotations, the program provides opportunities for further training at nearby facilities, including the Mercy Health – St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center, and Mercy Health – St. Joseph Warren Hospital, a Level III Trauma Center. Pediatric rotations are conducted at Akron Children's Hospital, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience for residents.

Curriculum and Rotations

In detail, the training includes critical exposure to emergency department flow and patient management as well as opportunities to develop teaching skills through medical education of students at the hospital.

Application Process

The application process for the St. Elizabeth Boardman Emergency Medicine Residency is highly structured. Interested candidates must submit a completed ERAS application, which includes:

  • An official Dean’s Letter or equivalent from medical school
  • Two or more letters of recommendation, including one Standard Letter of Evaluation (SLOE)
  • A personal statement
  • Curriculum vitae (CV)
  • Medical school transcript
  • USMLE or COMLEX scores (candidates with multiple failures will not be considered)

Eligibility for the program includes being a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, or having the ability to obtain a J1 Visa. Potential residents must also have graduated (or be on track to graduate) from a U.S. or Canadian medical school within the last five years. For international medical graduates, valid ECFMG certification is necessary.
