Our Mission

The mission of the East Liverpool City Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program is to provide residents of the tri-state area high-quality, compassionate healthcare services to prevent illness, relieve suffering, aid in health restoration, and promote wellness. Healthcare education will be provided to the patient, the community, and other health clinicians. Our services will be cost effective to ascertain affordability to the greatest number of people. We will provide necessary services to any person, without discrimination, within the financial limitations of the organization.

About the Program

East Liverpool City Hospital’s Family Medicine Residency is a three-year program serving the tri-state region of Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Residents train in a community hospital and rural Appalachian setting, caring for a broad patient population and gaining the practical experience needed to become confident, compassionate, and independent family physicians.

We are a small program, with four residents per year, and we consider that one of our greatest strengths. Our faculty get to know each resident personally and work closely with them throughout all three years of training. Residents receive individualized teaching, mentoring, and feedback while gradually assuming greater responsibility as their skills and confidence grow.

We have worked hard to create a program where residents are challenged academically and clinically but also feel supported personally. Our residents and faculty spend a great deal of time together, and we value the close relationships that develop throughout training.

Our goal is simple: to prepare excellent family physicians who are ready for independent practice and committed to caring for the communities they serve.

Curriculum Overview

Our three-year curriculum is designed to provide broad training across the full spectrum of Family Medicine while allowing residents increasing flexibility and independence as they progress through the program.

Residents gain experience in inpatient and outpatient medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, emergency care, behavioral health, surgery, and a wide range of medical and surgical specialties. Continuity care in the Family Medicine Center remains an important part of training throughout all three years.

As residents progress through the program, they spend increasing time in continuity clinic and have greater opportunities to individualize their education. PGY-3 residents have five elective blocks, allowing them to pursue areas of particular interest and prepare for their future practice.

Candidate Eligibility

Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements of East Liverpool City Hospital, our Sponsoring Institution, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP), as applicable.

Applicants must be graduates of, or on track to graduate from:

• A U.S. medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or

• A U.S. college of osteopathic medicine accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA); or

• A medical school outside the United States and meet applicable ACGME and ECFMG requirements for entry into graduate medical education.

East Liverpool City Hospital welcomes applications from both U.S. and international medical graduates.

Applicants requiring an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa are eligible for consideration. East Liverpool City Hospital does not sponsor H-1B visas.

There is no absolute year-of-graduation cutoff. Applicants who have been out of medical school for an extended period are considered individually, with attention to recent clinical activity, current clinical readiness, examination history, and the overall strength of the application.

International medical graduates must satisfy applicable ECFMG and NRMP requirements for participation in the Match and must meet ACGME eligibility requirements prior to appointment.

Application Requirements

A complete application should be submitted through ERAS and include:

• ERAS application

• Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE/Dean’s Letter), or equivalent

• Medical school transcript

• Personal statement

• Three letters of recommendation

• USMLE or COMLEX-USA examination results, as applicable

At least one letter from a Family Medicine physician who has worked directly with the applicant is strongly preferred.

Applicants should have completed USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK or COMLEX-USA Level 1 and Level 2-CE, as applicable, with results available for review.

Examination performance and attempt history are considered as part of the overall application. A prior examination failure does not automatically exclude an applicant from consideration. Repeated examination failures or other significant academic concerns may prompt additional review.

Visa Support

The program supports international candidates through visa sponsorship, particularly the J-1 visa, enabling international medical graduates to participate in this residency program. This support is crucial for candidates from outside the U.S. looking to further their medical education and training in a U.S. health care system [2]. East Liverpool City Hospital does not sponsor H-1B visas.

Wellness and Resident Life

Resident wellness is also an important part of our program. Residency is demanding, but we believe there should also be opportunities to build friendships, have fun, and spend meaningful time together outside of work. The program sponsors regular wellness activities and events throughout the year.

Education

Education at East Liverpool combines hands-on clinical experience with close faculty teaching and supervision and protected teaching time.

Residents care for their own continuity patient panels in the Family Medicine Center while gaining experience in inpatient medicine, pediatrics, women’s health, emergency medicine, behavioral health, procedures, and a wide range of specialty and community-based rotations.

Wednesday afternoons are protected for resident education and include faculty and resident lectures, board review, case-based learning, journal club, simulation, and other educational activities. Residents also have opportunities to teach medical students, participate in quality improvement, and develop skills that will help them become effective teachers and leaders themselves.

We believe residents should gain increasing independence as they demonstrate readiness. Faculty provide regular feedback, mentoring, and support throughout training while helping each resident identify areas for continued growth.
