Overview

Overview of the Anesthesiology Residency Program

The Allegheny Health Network Medical Education Consortium Anesthesiology Residency Training Program is fully accredited for three to four years of training by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The program offers two tracks: a three-year training program in Clinical Anesthesia (Advanced program) and a four-year program that includes a Fundamental Clinical Skills (FCS) year at a primary institution (Categorical program). This structure ensures comprehensive exposure to various aspects of anesthesiology, allowing residents to gain the necessary experience before sitting for the American Board of Anesthesiology certification exams. The program admits 10 residents per year and utilizes multiple training sites, including Allegheny General Hospital, West Penn Hospital, Forbes Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, providing a diverse clinical environment for learning.

Curriculum Details

Training Structure

The residency is structured to include:

  • Fundamental Clinical Skills (FCS) Year: Required of Categorical residents, it involves preliminary training before entering Clinical Anesthesia.
  • Clinical Anesthesia Years (CA-1 to CA-3): These years focus on developing clinical skills in anesthesia, covering all surgical subspecialties, critical care, and pain management.

The first year involves foundational training, while subsequent years provide more complex challenges and subspecialty exposure - including cardiothoracic anesthesia, trauma anesthesia, and critical care management.

2

Clinical Rotations

Residents encounter a variety of clinical scenarios throughout their training. They participate in essential rotations such as:

  • General surgery and subspecialties (e.g., orthopedic and urologic surgery)
