Overview

The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at the Allegheny Health Network (AHN) is designed to cultivate the next generation of radiologists through a balanced curriculum that intertwines theoretical education with hands-on clinical experience. This four-year residency program, accredited by the ACGME, consists of clinical training from postgraduate year two (PGY2) through PGY5 and typically accommodates six residents per year.

Program Curriculum

The curriculum is structured into organized rotations that cover various subspecialties, including abdominal imaging, breast imaging, chest and cardiac imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, neuroradiology, nuclear medicine, pediatric radiology, and vascular and interventional radiology. Each rotation lasts four weeks, allowing residents to immerse themselves in specific areas of radiologic practice while also participating in didactic sessions and hands-on training.

4

A robust didactic curriculum repeats every two years and encompasses all topics relevant to the American Board of Radiology certification. The program incorporates daily departmental conferences and multidisciplinary meetings that enhance collaborative learning and support comprehensive educational growth.

12

Clinical Rotations

The clinical training involves comprehensive exposure to various imaging modalities including CT, MRI, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy. Residents also engage in interventional radiology procedures and participate in specific workshops aimed at refining procedural skills necessary for the field. The structured system ensures that each resident achieves competency in both image interpretation and procedural performance by the end of their training.

5

Research and Scholarly Activities

The program fosters a culture of research, encouraging residents to actively engage in scholarly activities. Residents are supported with funding for travel to present their first-authored projects at conferences, and additional leave days are allocated for those achieving publication. Faculty members are also dedicated to mentoring residents throughout this process, contributing to a supportive research environment that emphasises academic excellence.

15

Wellness and Support

Recognizing the demanding nature of medical training, the program prioritizes resident wellness and mental health. Initiatives include access to counseling services, regular wellness retreats, and team-building activities. The program maintains a wellness committee that ensures a supportive community and provides resources to combat burnout and promote overall wellbeing.

16

Unique Aspects

The AHN Radiology Residency Program emphasizes strong procedural training, starting from day one, with few fellows in-house which allows residents to perform the majority of procedures. The integration of a unique Physics curriculum supports the theoretical backbone required for understanding imaging science. Moreover, residents benefit from a close-knit community that encourages camaraderie and mentorship among peers and faculty.

17

Living in Pittsburgh

Application Process and Requirements

The application process for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program is exclusively through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must submit a complete application by December 1, including medical school transcripts, letters of recommendation (minimum three, one from a radiologist), and a personal statement. 9

Competitiveness

The program is highly competitive, attracting a diverse range of applicants, comprising U.S. medical graduates as well as international medical graduates (IMGs). To ensure a well-rounded cohort, the program does not have specific cut-offs for test scores but values the entirety of the application.
