UPMC Medical Education/McKeesport Hospital Program

The Family Medicine Residency Program at UPMC McKeesport is designed to deliver comprehensive training dedicated to community service and patient-centered care. The program is built on a foundation of community involvement, utilizing local resources and addressing diverse healthcare needs.

Application Process

All applicants are required to apply through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). The program does not accept paper applications, and application submissions are accepted from September 15th until December 1st. Important application requirements include the Common ERAS Application Form, personal statement, updated CV, USMLE or COMLEX transcripts, proof of passing the Clinical Skills Assessment Exam or COMLEX PE, and at least three letters of recommendation. Candidates seeking to apply should have graduated within the last five years and must be ECFMG certified. The program sponsors J1 and H1B visas to support international medical graduates. The competitiveness of the program suggests a preference for well-rounded candidates, as various factors come into play during the selection process.

Curriculum and Rotations

The Family Medicine Residency curriculum includes a variety of unique training tracks:

• Lifestyle Medicine Track: This track is designed to provide comprehensive training in lifestyle medicine, emphasizing preventive healthcare practices including nutrition and wellness.
• HIV Primary Care Track: This track focuses on providing high-quality care to HIV-infected individuals and their families, with training conducted at the Pittsburgh AIDS Center for Treatment clinic.
• Global Health Track: This track is aimed at training future family physicians in delivering local and international healthcare solutions and advancing advocacy for underserved communities.

The program’s core curriculum encompasses both Family Medicine and Psychiatry, fostering integrated training through longitudinal outpatient experiences.

Community Medicine Focus

At UPMC McKeesport, there is a profound commitment to community medicine. Residents engage in outreach projects aimed at addressing local health disparities and promoting public health education. Examples include:

• Latterman Family Health Center: This center provides a wide range of healthcare services and hosts comprehensive medical training for residents.
• The 9th Street Clinic: A free clinic for the uninsured that allows residents to engage with patients in a lower-resource environment.

The hospital has modern technological support, including Electronic Health Records and access to the University of Pittsburgh Health Science Library.
