The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program is committed to training residents to become expert clinicians, leaders, educators, and researchers in the field of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R). UPMC offers a comprehensive didactic series and a broad experience in PM&R. The program has a diverse faculty consisting of physicians, scientists, neuropsychologists, and bioengineers dedicated to providing exceptional education. Residents have the opportunity to engage in academic projects and leadership roles beyond their clinical experiences.
UPMC PM&R Department is highly ranked nationally and is among the top 15 programs in the US News and World Report ranking. It also holds a top 5 position in PM&R departments in NIH funding. The program aims to prepare residents to become competitive fellowship applicants, academic leaders, and exemplary patient care providers.
The UPMC PM&R Residency Program accepts international medical graduates who have graduated from an ECFMG-certified medical school within the last five years. Successful applicants typically have passed the USMLE on their first attempt and have prior clinical training in the United States. The UPMC Medical Education Program sponsors J-1 visas for accepted candidates.
Application requirements for the UPMC PM&R Residency Program include a common ERAS application form, curriculum vitae with no gaps, personal statement, medical school transcript, USMLE/COMLEX board scores, a minimum of 3 recommendation letters (preferably one from a PM&R faculty member), and a Dean's letter of recommendation.
The program offers additional educational opportunities, research requirements, quality improvement initiatives, and three specialty tracks: Educational Leadership, Administrative Leadership, and Research. Residents can participate in rotations at various UPMC facilities in the Greater Pittsburgh area, providing exposure to a wide range of clinical experiences in PM&R.
The UPMC PM&R Residency Program supports a good work-life balance, with a work week averaging 50-60 hours and one weekend call per month. The program also prioritizes resident wellness through various initiatives and programs aimed at supporting residents both inside and outside the workplace throughout the year.
