The West Virginia University Dermatology Residency Program offers a comprehensive and structured training pathway for residents seeking a career in dermatology. This three-year, ACGME accredited program is the only one of its kind in West Virginia and is dedicated to developing skilled dermatologists who can diagnose and treat all forms of skin diseases, including malignant conditions.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum emphasizes a tailored training approach led by board-certified dermatologists. It encompasses a balance of clinical care and research opportunities, enabling residents to follow their patients longitudinally through continuity clinics. Each resident is involved in seeing approximately 425 patients monthly, alongside an average of 20 consults, providing a rich clinical experience.

Clinical Rotations

During the residency, students rotate through various subspecialties within dermatology, including Pediatric Dermatology and Procedural Dermatology. Residents gain hands-on experience in outpatient care, including advanced treatment modalities such as Mohs surgery, laser treatments, and UVB light treatments, thus ensuring exposure to cutting-edge dermatological practices. A dedicated research assistant is available to support residents in their academic and investigative pursuits, including clinical trials and drug development studies.

Residents train primarily at the Ruby Memorial Hospital, a leader in patient care affiliated with the WVU Medicine system, which includes various clinics and specialty sites. Application Process

The application for the residency program requires submission through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Specific criteria include a minimum USMLE Step 1 score of 225, the provision of a medical school transcript, a personal statement, and at least three letters of recommendation. Notably, the program only offers J-1 visa sponsorship for international medical graduates; H-1b visas are not supported. The residency accepts two new residents each year, indicating a competitive selection process to join this notable program.
