West Virginia University Program

The combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Program at West Virginia University provides a comprehensive training experience in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. Established in 1981, the program aims to develop well-rounded clinicians capable of delivering patient-centered care across all age groups. Curriculum

The curriculum is structured across four years, with integrated rotations in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics resulting in board eligibility in both fields.3

PGY 1 Rotations

PGY 1 residents undertake rotations in:

• Internal Medicine Wards (2 months)
• Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
• Cardiology/CCU
• Emergency Department (ED)
• Pediatrics Wards (2 months)
• Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
• Newborn Nursery (NBN)
• Pediatric Associates Continuity Clinic (PACC)

Subsequent Years

In PGY 2 through PGY 4, residents experience more specialized rotations, including Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Nephrology, and various elective opportunities, allowing for individualized curriculum choices tailored to career aspirations.3

The program utilizes advanced medical facilities, including Ruby Memorial Hospital, VA Medical Center, and various outpatient clinics affiliated with WVU Medicine. Residents interested in further specialization can explore the Population Health Management in Primary Care Fellowship, which combines clinical training with opportunities for obtaining a Master's degree in Public Health or related fields.5
