Summa Health System/NEOMED Program

The pathology residency program at Summa Health System/NEOMED offers an innovative training experience encompassing both anatomic and clinical pathology delivered in a supportive and academically-affiliated community setting. Curriculum

The residency consists of 28 months dedicated to anatomic pathology and 18 months to clinical pathology. The fourth year provides a flexible curriculum, allowing residents to strengthen their weaknesses, focus on specific interests, and delve into subspecialty areas. Each resident will manage a significant volume of cases, with access to approximately 29,500 surgical specimens, 40 autopsies yearly, and an extensive variety of cytological specimens which includes over 3,000 non-gyn specimens and 1,500 fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cases annually 1.

Rotations and Training Sites

The program features an academic affiliation with Akron Children's Hospital, providing valuable rotations concerning pediatric pathology, electron microscopy, and molecular biology. Moreover, residents will engage in forensic and autopsy training supported by the Summit County Medical Examiner's Office. Applicants must be graduates of accredited medical schools in the United States or Canada, or hold a valid Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate if trained outside the U.S. or Canada. All candidates must have completed USMLE steps 1 and 2 or DOCOMLEX equivalent. J-1 visa applicants are considered provided they fulfill all educational and certification prerequisites 6.
