Residency Advisor

The Henry Ford St. John Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program aims to provide a comprehensive graduate medical education in a supervised, academic setting, focusing on high-quality and compassionate care for patients. The residency program is designed with milestones-based training aligned with the six core competencies defined by the ACGME: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communication Skills, Professionalism, Practice-Based Learning & Improvement, and System-Based Practice. Graduates are expected to excel as internists, prepared for either general practice, hospital medicine, or subspecialty fellowship training 1.

Each academic year, there are 21 categorical residents and a number of preliminary R1 residents along with chief residents, all supported by a dedicated faculty in General Medicine and various subspecialties. Available subspecialty training includes Allergy-Immunology, Cardiology, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatrics, Hematology/Oncology, Palliative Care, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Rheumatology 1.

Application Process

The application process for the program is exclusively conducted through ERAS. The program is very competitive, receiving over 3,000 applications annually, from which only about 10% are invited for interviews. Selection criteria focus on distinguishing characteristics, including USMLE and COMLEX scores, medical school graduation dates, and notable experiences. Candidates are contacted directly via telephone for interview scheduling, which is conducted virtually through the Zoom platform 2.

Training and Curriculum

The residency program structure includes extensive rotations designed to cover the fundamental areas of internal medicine. The R1 year allows three weeks of vacation, while R2 and R3 years include mandatory rotations in critical areas such as Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Geriatrics, and Neurology, ensuring residents gain exposure to a broad spectrum of medical practices 8.
