Curriculum Overview

Residents will have dedicated time for academic conferences every Wednesday morning. These sessions include didactics, case presentations, hands on workshops, and journal club. The residents do not work in the ED after 10pm the night before didactics to help protect this important time for learning. As per ACGME and FSU GME requirements, residents will perform a Quality Improvement (QI) project and participate in scholarly activity. Our academic calendar is based on the calendar month with each rotation starting on the 1st and finishing on the last day of the month so there are 12 rotations per year. Our interns start with a 1-month orientation that includes didactics, hand on workshops, certification courses, short shifts with our nurses and pharmacist, and a few shifts in the ED. This month is an excellent opportunity for our residents to get comfortable and feel prepared to begin their training. They also get a chance to bond as a class with multiple wellness events and opportunities to socialize. The only off campus rotation is the pediatric ICU month which the residents complete at the Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. This site is about an hour away in beautiful St. Petersburg, Florida and housing is provided for the month to minimize the need to commute.

Emergency Department rotations and duty hours

Rotations follow calendar months rather than a 28‑day cycle. Shift durations range from 8 to 11 hours. Interns do not work overnight shifts. Residents typically receive at least two complete weekends off each month.

Monthly ED hour targets:

* PGY‑1 — 190 hours
* PGY‑2 — 175 hours
* PGY‑3 — 160 hours

Conferences and travel support

The program funds attendance for each resident class at a national conference annually, covering registration, travel, lodging, and a food allowance. Current practice is:

* Interns attend FCEP
* PGY‑2 attend SAEM
* PGY‑3 attend ACEP

Additional conference support may be available for residents who present scholarly work.

Educational objectives

The Model of the Clinical Practice of Emergency Medicine (EM Model) serves as the basis for our curriculum. It is our goal that our residents master this material, are more than prepared to practice in any environment and perform well on the emergency medicine certifying examination.

Simulation program

Simulation is integral to our curriculum. Residents take part in regularly scheduled simulation days in a modern simulation facility located in the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute. The institute houses dedicated classrooms, control rooms, and simulated treatment spaces across 84,000 sq ft of research, education, and simulation space.

Simulation is coordinated by experienced faculty, including three co‑directors, designated simulation chief residents, and simulation technicians. Sessions provide opportunities for repetitive procedural practice on high‑fidelity mannequins, team communication exercises, and crisis resource management training. Residents may contribute to case design, teach other learners, and refine skills in giving and receiving feedback.

Graduates are expected to be confident performing common clinical procedures (e.g., endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, central venous catheterization) and prepared to manage high‑acuity, low‑frequency procedures (HALO) such as pericardiocentesis, transvenous pacemaker placement, and cricothyrotomy through simulation and clinical exposure. The program is committed to preparing residents for clinical practice and success on certification exams.

9. Eligibility to obtain an Intern/Resident Physician Medical License from the Florida Board of Medicine
10. Ability to meet employment requirements of Florida State University and Sarasota Memorial Hospital

Applicants from osteopathic or international medical schools

As an alternative to LCME accreditation, applicants may be graduates of a U.S. osteopathic medical school accredited by the AOA, or graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet the following:

* Graduated from medical school within the past 3 years
* Possess a valid ECFMG certificate prior to application submission
* Demonstrate fluency in spoken and written English
