HonorHealth Program

The HonorHealth Rheumatology Fellowship is a two-year ACGME-accredited training program aimed at providing comprehensive training in clinical rheumatology and related areas of clinical research. The mission of this program is to prepare fellows for careers in clinical practice, research, and education, ensuring that they can address the complex clinical, scientific, and public health challenges in rheumatology.

The program focuses on developing clinically competent rheumatologists who are equipped with lifelong learning habits necessary for ongoing professional development. Graduating fellows will have a strong foundational skill set that can be adapted to various healthcare settings.

Training Sites

Training is conducted at multiple sites providing a diverse patient population and a range of clinical experiences. Key training sites include:

• HonorHealth Rheumatology at Glendale Health Center
• HonorHealth Rheumatology - The Block at Pima
• HonorHealth Scottsdale Osborn Medical Center
• HonorHealth Research and Innovation Institute
• Phoenix VA Health Care System
• Phoenix Children’s Hospital for pediatric rheumatology exposure
• Arizona Arthritis and Rheumatology Associates

These sites facilitate a comprehensive exposure to rheumatology clinics and inpatient services, enhancing fellows' diagnostic and treatment skills for various rheumatological conditions.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to offer extensive training in musculoskeletal ultrasonography, clinical research, and patient care. Fellows will undergo dedicated musculoskeletal radiology training with academic board-certified musculoskeletal radiologists, preparing them for certifications such as the RhMSUS through the American College of Rheumatology and the CCD® exam via the International Society of Clinical Densitometry (ISCD).

Fellows have the opportunity to engage in a variety of elective rotations at different clinical and academic sites across Arizona. Protected research time is embedded within the fellowship to allow participation in clinical trials at the HonorHealth Research and Innovation Institute.

Application and Eligibility Criteria

The application process for the HonorHealth Rheumatology Fellowship is conducted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Applicants must have completed three years of postgraduate training in an accredited internal medicine program in the U.S. or Canada and be board-eligible or board-certified. The program accepts a diverse range of candidates, including those from osteopathic backgrounds and international medical graduates (IMGs), which enhances its competitiveness.

Additionally, it should be noted that HonorHealth does not sponsor H-1B visas but offers J-1 visa sponsorship for eligible fellows through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Incoming J-1 fellows are required to obtain their J-1 visas before commencing the fellowship.
