The Kaiser Permanente Northern California Nephrology Fellowship is a 24-month ACGME-accredited program based in San Francisco. This program focuses on training future leaders in nephrology, emphasizing clinical skills and research opportunities for fellows.

Program Overview

Every year, the program admits two fellows through the NRMP match, highlighting its competitive nature. Training Sites

Fellows primarily train at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center. Additionally, they gain experience at Kaiser Permanente Oakland, which is equipped with a varied patient demographic. The fellowship includes essential training in palliative care and home dialysis therapies at the Santa Clara facility, which houses the largest peritoneal dialysis unit in Northern California. Fellows participate in kidney transplant rotations at UCSF and Kaiser Permanente's Kidney Transplant Clinics, ensuring a holistic training experience in all aspects of nephrology.

Curriculum and Rotations

The curriculum is designed to fulfill the guidelines set forth by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). Fellows rotate through inpatient and outpatient nephrology, dialysis therapies, and glomerular diseases. The schedule includes:

• Continuity clinic for outpatient care, running throughout the fellowship
• One month of inpatient consultation at Kaiser Oakland
• Outpatient home dialysis rotations occurring at KP Santa Clara
• Kidney transplant rotations at UCSF each year
• Hybrid kidney pathology rotations at Stanford University

Each rotation is structured to reinforce comprehensive clinical training while fostering research engagement.

Research Opportunities

Research is a vital component of the fellowship. Fellows are encouraged to participate in clinical research, guided by the KP Division of Research. Through collaborations with faculty, fellows can engage in diverse research projects, attend national meetings, and present their findings.
