Overview

The Sports Medicine Fellowship at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, established in 2002, operates under the Department of Family Medicine. The primary goals of the program are to address the needs of a growing active and athletic patient base and enhance the educational opportunities available within the Family Medicine Residency Program. The fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and allows graduates to pursue a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine.

Curriculum

This one-year fellowship focuses on comprehensive primary care sports medicine, with fellows gaining invaluable clinical experience in the Sports Medicine Consultation Clinic. The curriculum encompasses all facets of sports medicine, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and pulmonary health, along with advanced procedural training in a supervised environment.

Fellows participate as team physicians for several local academic institutions, including California State University Los Angeles and Santa Monica College, providing medical care at athletic events. They also assist in organizing and acting as co-medical directors for the Ironman 70.3 California Triathlon and various Kaiser Permanente-sponsored events. Additionally, the academic structure includes direct patient care, didactic lectures, workshops, and conferences that enrich the fellows' educational affiliation with a multidisciplinary faculty.

Unique Aspects of the Program

The Sports Medicine Fellowship offers two positions annually. Applicants must have completed or be in the process of completing residency training in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, or Pediatrics. Candidates are required to be board eligible or board certified in their specialty at the time of application.
