- Hands-on exposure to patient care, applying therapeutic techniques such as motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other evidence-based practices.
- Comprehensive education on the neurobiological aspects of addiction and psychopharmacotherapy.
- Management tactics for chronic pain and psychiatric comorbidities.
- Experience with a variety of treatment settings, including acute care consultations, inpatient rehabilitation, and outpatient clinic visits.
- Integration of public health perspectives into the treatment of substance use disorders.
Fellows will partake in various rotations, including:
- Acute care consultation services (2 months)
- BMC inpatient unit (1 month)
- Partial hospitalization program and adolescent services (2 months)
- VA Loma Linda STAR clinic (2 months)
- Substance use programs in county jail settings (1 month)
Research and Educational Activities
Conducting a quality improvement project is mandatory during the fellowship, deepening the fellows' research skills and knowledge in addiction medicine. Weekly lectures hosted by the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine cover a range of topics pertinent to the Addiction Medicine Board examination.
Application Process
The program seeks candidates who demonstrate a commitment to the institution's mission and are ready to engage in medical outreach initiatives. Applicants must submit a comprehensive application package that includes a medical school diploma, curriculum vitae, and letters of recommendation. Candidates will be considered based on several minimum requirements, including possession of a valid work permit before placement in the program and successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX exams.
