3282131079The Pediatric Nephrology Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive, accredited three-year training experience designed to equip fellows with the requisite training and skills necessary for a successful career in Pediatric Nephrology. The program currently accommodates three fellows, allowing for intimate educational experiences as fellows progress through their training. Certified by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since 2008, this fellowship is structured to ensure that participants are well-prepared for certification by the American Board of Pediatrics, Subboard Pediatric Nephrology.
Clinical Training
During the fellowship, the trainee will gain extensive clinical exposure across both inpatient and outpatient settings. This training encompasses the diagnosis and management of a broad spectrum of pediatric renal conditions including, but not limited to, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, nephrotic syndrome, various forms of glomerular diseases, fluid and electrolyte disorders, congenital renal diseases, hypertension, and genitourinary disorders. Such comprehensive training ensures that fellows are sufficiently prepared to handle a wide array of pediatric nephrology cases.
Fellows will also receive training in acute and chronic dialysis methodologies. This includes hands-on experience with conventional hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and continuous renal replacement therapies, all crucial for managing children with severe renal impairments. In addition, the program offers training in plasmapheresis, an important procedure in the management of certain pediatric kidney diseases.
In terms of transplantation, fellows will be actively involved in every facet of pediatric renal transplantation. This includes gaining experience in both pre-operative and post-operative patient management, along with the opportunity to provide extensive longitudinal follow-up care for renal transplant patients. Furthermore, the training includes practical experience such as performing percutaneous renal biopsies, an essential skill in assessing renal pathology.
Another noteworthy aspect of the fellowship is the opportunity for fellows to provide nephrology consultations for patients on other clinical services, thereby expanding their exposure and integration within pediatric healthcare teams.
