Residency Advisor
The Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship Program at Ochsner Clinic Foundation is a one-year fellowship intended for physicians who have successfully completed an approved residency in Orthopedic Surgery and are eligible for the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery examination. This program focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of sports-related injuries, including those of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle, and aims to equip fellows with the skills required for high-quality patient care in sports medicine.

Additionally, fellows participate in a monthly sports journal club discussing current literature, and they are engaged in both virtual case reports and research project presentations.

Fellows in the program will work closely with a multidisciplinary sports medicine team. The learning experience includes participation in outpatient office practice, surgical practice, and logistical management of sports teams. Surgical practice specifically enhances skills in knee, shoulder, and elbow surgery, involving both arthroscopic and open procedures.

Research and scholarly activities are an integral part of the fellowship. Each fellow is expected to actively participate in ongoing research projects as well as complete one basic science or clinical project designed for presentation and publication. Research support includes 24-hour access to clinical resources and on-site assistance from biostatisticians and faculty, as well as collaborations with biomechanical engineering experts.

The fellowship utilizes multiple teaching facilities within the Ochsner Health system, including the Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans and the Ochsner Health Center in Elmwood. These facilities provide a comprehensive range of healthcare services and are equipped for innovative patient-centered care, evidence-based medicine, and advanced surgical training.
5Application Requirements
Eligible applicants must have completed a U.S. ACGME accredited orthopedic surgery residency program. The application process requires candidates to obtain an unrestricted medical license in Louisiana, a Louisiana Controlled Dangerous Substance license, and a DEA license. These licensing requirements ensure that fellows are appropriately certified for clinical practice within the state.
