The Cytopathology Fellowship Program at Rush University Medical Center is a one-year ACGME-accredited program designed for physicians who have completed either a four-year Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency or a three-year Anatomic Pathology Residency from an ACGME-accredited program. This fellowship is characterized by a rigorous curriculum and extensive hands-on training in cytopathology, with the opportunity for only one position available annually.

The program handles a significant volume of cases, processing over 13,000 cases each year, which includes approximately 9,000 gynecologic pap smears and 4,000 non-gynecologic specimens, including more than 1,400 fine-needle aspirations. Fellows will engage in a 12-month concentrated diagnostic training course emphasizing both aspirational and exfoliative cytology. This training involves the review of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, along with the responsibility for the comprehensive management of cases, which includes ordering pertinent studies, such as immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics.

Additionally, the fellowship provides exposure to rapid onsite assessment techniques from various relevant departments, enhancing the fellows' diagnostic capabilities. Fellows will also engage with interventional procedures, performing superficial palpable fine-needle aspirations in both outpatient and inpatient settings. The program emphasizes teaching, expecting fellows to mentor rotating residents and medical students actively.

The program's curriculum includes quality assurance responsibilities in the cytology laboratory, allowing fellows to participate in critical retrospective reviews and histology-cytology correlations. The participation in the Multidisciplinary Thyroid Tumor Board is an essential aspect of the program, providing fellows with a diverse exposure to relevant cases. An elective month in surgical pathology is also optional, enabling further experience in this subspecialty. Research and scholarly activities are highly encouraged, including opportunities for presenting findings at national meetings.

To apply for this fellowship, candidates must have successfully completed residency training in either anatomical pathology or a combined anatomical and clinical pathology program. Applicants must also be certified or eligible for certification by the American Board of Pathology prior to the start of the fellowship. The application process includes a completed fellowship application form, a comprehensive curriculum vitae, a personal statement, and three letters of recommendation, which should include a letter from the applicant's program director.

The program welcomes applications from international medical graduates and sponsors J-1 visas, facilitating the participation of qualified candidates from various backgrounds.

Rush University Medical Center's Cytopathology Fellowship is considered moderately competitive, welcoming applications from both U.S. graduates and international medical graduates. It is crucial for applicants to present a strong academic background and relevant experience throughout the application process.

Applicants are required to have graduated from an approved medical school within the last five years and be eligible for licensure to practice medicine in Illinois. This inclusion reflects the program's commitment to fostering fresh perspectives from recent medical school graduates.
