University of Louisville School of Medicine Program

The Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of Louisville School of Medicine offers a one-year comprehensive training program in an ACGME-accredited setting. This fellowship is designed for individuals who have completed their Anatomic Pathology (AP) or Anatomic Pathology/Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) residency training in an ACGME accredited program. Prospective candidates must possess eligibility for a medical license in Kentucky and are required to pass Step III of the USMLE prior to acceptance into the fellowship.

The fellowship is new for the academic years commencing in July 2025, July 2026, and July 2027. The University of Louisville Hospital demonstrates a high work volume with approximately 750 Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) procedures performed annually. Moreover, various procedural techniques are utilized in-house, including superficial FNA by Pathology Staff and guidance procedures using Computed Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS), and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS).

Curriculum and Rotations

The cytopathology curriculum incorporates diverse rotations that extend beyond standard cytopathologic training. This includes specialized training opportunities in Flow Cytometry, Molecular Pathology, and Immunohistochemistry. Additionally, fellows have the chance to undertake rotations in various sub-specialties within Surgical Pathology, equipping them with a robust set of skills applicable to multiple areas of pathology.
