Overview

The Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Rush University Medical Center is a comprehensive program that provides advanced training in cardiovascular interventional procedures. This program is ACGME-accredited and is designed for those who have completed an ACGME-accredited cardiovascular disease fellowship or its equivalent. The fellowship is competitive and welcomes international medical graduates (IMGs), as it offers sponsorship for both J-1 and H1-B visas, accommodating a diverse applicant pool.

Fellows in this program will undertake their training in various state-of-the-art facilities, including the cardiac catheterization labs at Rush University Medical Center, John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, and Rush Oak Park Hospital. This diverse training environment ensures fellows gain exposure to a broad range of cardiovascular interventional techniques.

Curriculum and Training

The fellowship curriculum focuses on both procedural competence and clinical knowledge. Fellows will gain expert experience in:

  • Right and left heart catheterizations
  • Percutaneous coronary and peripheral interventions
  • Coronary microvascular testing
  • Utilization of a variety of vascular closure devices
  • Chronic total occlusion (CTO) interventions
  • Application of various atherectomy devices, including rotational, orbital, and laser
  • Mechanical circulatory support-assisted PCI, such as Impella
  • Pulmonary embolism interventions that utilize thrombectomy and thrombolysis devices
  • CardioMEMS implantation

This comprehensive training not only enhances the skill set needed in interventional cardiology but also prepares fellows to engage in important procedure-related clinical research.

Research Opportunities

Rush University Medical Center emphasizes the integration of cutting-edge technology and clinical research within the fellowship program. Fellows have the opportunity to participate in both single-center and multi-center clinical trials, which aim to explore new interventional cardiovascular treatments, devices, and pharmacological therapies. This engagement in research not only enriches the fellow's training but also contributes to the advancement of the field of interventional cardiology.

Application Process

The application process for the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is carried out through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A total of two fellowship positions are available each year, and applications must be received by January 31. If selected for an interview, candidates will have the chance to meet key faculty members and tour the Rush facilities between February and April. It is important for applicants to note that successful candidates are expected to have completed a prior ACGME-accredited cardiovascular disease fellowship.

Special Application Requirements

While specific requirements may vary, candidates should be aware that having previously completed an ACGME-accredited cardiovascular disease fellowship is mandatory. Additionally, the program appreciates a diverse range of backgrounds; thus, it is friendly towards DO/IMG applicants. Despite its competitive nature, the program aims to consider candidates holistically.
