Rutgers Health/Trinitas Regional Medical Center Program

This program offers a comprehensive General Psychiatry Residency at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, under the auspices of Rutgers Health. Established in 2006, the program aims to prepare residents for successful careers within the behavioral health field by equipping them with essential knowledge, clinical experience, and humanistic skills necessary for delivering high-quality patient care. Annually, the program boasts a remarkable 100% board certification rate for its residents throughout the four years of training.

The Trinitas Regional Medical Center recognizes the importance of behavioral health and psychiatric services in the overall context of healthcare. The residency program provides residents with robust access to a variety of psychiatry subspecialties, allowing them to gain a wealth of experience through the treatment of patients across a wide spectrum of settings, including inpatient, outpatient, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, substance abuse, child psychiatry, consultation, and emergency psychiatry. The curriculum ensures a balance of rigorous academic instruction and clinical experience.

Curriculum Overview

The curriculum is structured across the four years of residency to provide comprehensive training. In the first year (PGY I), residents engage in six months of Adult Inpatient Psychiatry, three months of Internal Medicine, one month of Emergency Medicine, and two months of Neurology, while also incorporating vacation periods.

Year two (PGY II) focuses on the foundations of various subspecialties, including two months each in Adult Inpatient Psychiatry, Geriatric Psychiatry, and Consultation Psychiatry, with additional time devoted to Child Psychiatry and Psychiatric Emergency Medicine. PGY III involves a year of Adult Outpatient Psychiatry, further emphasizing practical application of skills.

In the final year (PGY IV), residents can explore elective rotations tailored to their interests, further enriching their training experience while completing their required curriculum.

Clinical Rotations and Supervision

Clinical rotations primarily take place on-site at Trinitas, with the exception of a two-month Neurology rotation at JFK. This accessibility enables residents to closely integrate their academic and clinical training within a familiar environment, promoting effective learning experiences. Resident supervision is conducted by experienced, board-certified psychiatrists who guide the residents through both inpatient and outpatient treatment modalities, thereby ensuring high-quality patient management and learning opportunities.

Facilities and Resident Support

The facilities at Trinitas are designed to support the educational needs of the residents. Features include state-of-the-art libraries, computerized medical records systems, resident lounges, and on-call rooms, all aimed at creating an optimal learning atmosphere. The program also offers additional resources for residents, such as meal cards while on call, lab coats, scrubs, a book allowance, and comprehensive medical and dental insurance packages.

Visa Support and Application Requirements

It is important to note that this program does not sponsor visas, which can be a deciding factor for international medical graduates (IMGs) considering applying. Additionally, applicants are generally expected to possess USMLE scores of 225 and above on their first attempts, or equivalent COMLEX scores. The program is considered competitive but is open to osteopathic (DO) graduates as well as IMGs with strong qualifications.

Graduates of the program have successfully transitioned into various fellowship programs in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at renowned institutions, thereby emphasizing the robust preparatory nature of the residency.
