Sparrow Hospital Program

The Sparrow General Surgery Residency is an ACGME-accredited 5-year program affiliated with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. The program is located primarily at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing and also at McLaren Flint. Residents participate in strong rotations covering the breadth of general surgery without requiring a research year, but each resident must complete 2 research projects during their training to graduate.

Residents benefit from early operative experience, robust didactic sessions, and a supportive learning environment. Graduates of the program have gone on to pursue fellowships in various subspecialties or directly enter practice in diverse settings across the USA and beyond.

The application process includes participation in the NRMP and SOAP. The program accepts applications from US allopathic and osteopathic medical schools through ERAS, as well as IMG applicants. The selection criteria for residents consider various aspects such as academic achievements, research experience, humanitarian volunteerism, and personal qualities like leadership, work ethic, professionalism, and enthusiasm for surgery.

For foreign medical graduates, the program sponsors J1 Visas, requires a current ECFMG certificate, no more than 2 years since graduation, and at least 1 year of US clinical experience.

Rotations in the program cover a range of surgical disciplines at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, McLaren Flint, and the University of Nebraska Medical Center for the transplant experience in the PGY 4 year.

Research participation during residency is strongly encouraged, with residents completing two research projects as a graduation requirement. The program also provides opportunities for residents to present their findings at local, regional, and national conferences.
