St Elizabeth's Medical Center Program

The St. Elizabeth's Medical Center Hematology-Oncology Fellowship Program is an accredited ACGME certified program affiliated with the Tufts University School of Medicine and guided by faculty from the prestigious Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI). This fellowship is designed to cultivate highly skilled and compassionate hematologists-oncologists, preparing them for careers in both academic and clinical realms upon completion. The program emphasizes a comprehensive curriculum that facilitates clinical training and equips fellows for the American Board of Internal Medicine examination in medical oncology and hematology.

Curriculum

The clinical training offered through the fellowship occurs in several prominent clinical settings, primarily at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, a major teaching hospital that serves the Boston region. St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center is known for its exceptional quality of care and has a notable history in hematology dating back to its recognition through the contributions of esteemed professionals. The fellowship allows first- and second-year fellows to primarily engage with DFCI at St. Elizabeth's campus, providing continuity in clinics and extensive experience with the hematology-oncology consult service.

Fellows in their third year have opportunities to rotate at DFCI's main campus, enabling exposure to specialized fields such as sarcoma, melanoma, neuro-oncology, and head and neck cancers. A month-long service in leukemia and bone marrow transplantation at DFCI’s main campus is also part of their training.

Fellowship Goals

Throughout the course of the fellowship, participants will aim to achieve specific educational objectives. They will gain profound insights into cancer pathogenesis, management techniques for various tumors, and the prevailing impacts of psychosocial issues on patient care. Technical competencies, including various critical procedures related to hematology and oncology, will also be developed. The program promotes professional communication skills essential for collaboration with healthcare teams and the importance of making informed, evidence-based decisions in patient care.

Rotations

The rotations comprise core clinical experiences that cover general oncology and specialized medical oncology subspecialties. The curriculum includes inpatient hematology as well as medical oncology consult services at St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, along with outpatient rotations at various Dana-Farber locations. Over the three years, fellows engage in structured continuity clinics that are organized in blocks to ensure a comprehensive experience across diverse clinical scenarios.

Key rotations during the fellowship include inpatient consultations and crucial electives in specialized fields, with required rotations from lung cancer to benign and malignant hematology. In addition to clinical rotations, organized conferences consisting of multidisciplinary tumor boards, lectures, journal clubs, and board review sessions are critical components of the educational experience.

Application Process

Applications are exclusively accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), and candidate selection is managed via the National Residency Match Program. Applicants must present three letters of recommendation (LOR), with one mandatory letter from a current or former program director. Eligible candidates must also have completed a three-year ACGME accredited internal medicine residency and possess an unrestricted medical license in Massachusetts.

Importantly, the program offers visa support for qualified international medical graduates, specifically providing sponsorship for J1 visas. However, H1-B visa sponsorship is not available for the current academic year. This support is part of the program's commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive training environment.

Competitiveness and Special Considerations

Prospective applicants should note that the program maintains a competitive selection process aimed at candidates who demonstrate strong clinical aptitude and a genuine commitment to hematology and oncology. Graduates from US LCME or AOA accredited medical schools are preferred, alongside ECFMG accredited graduates who meet the specified licensing requirements. Applicants with multiple failed attempts at the USMLE or those with substantial gaps between their medical education may require additional considerations regarding their eligibility.
