Overview of the Fellowship Program

The UCLA-VA Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Fellowship Program is dedicated to training exceptional clinicians, educators, and researchers in the field of endocrinology. The program is housed at renowned institutions, including the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, the Santa Monica UCLA Medical Center, and the VA Greater Los Angeles Health Care System. The curriculum emphasizes a mix of inpatient and outpatient care, allowing fellows to manage a diverse array of endocrine disorders.

Throughout the duration of the two-year program, five to six fellows are trained annually, emphasizing progressive independence in clinical practice. Key competencies developed include proficiency in thyroid ultrasound, fine-needle aspiration (FNA), and interpretation of bone densitometry, as well as expertise in the use of insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors.

Curriculum Highlights

Clinical Training

The fellowship offers a comprehensive clinical rotation schedule, which includes:

  • Inpatient Consultation: Planned for 4-5 months during the first year, and 3-4 months during the second year, allowing fellows to manage complex endocrine conditions in a multidisciplinary setting.
  • Outpatient Rotations: Includes continuity clinics and specialized clinics tailored to various endocrine disorders, facilitating long-term patient management.
  • Research Opportunities: Fellows engage in scholarly research projects under faculty mentorship, with a focus on subjects such as diabetes prevention, thyroid disorders, and adipose tissue research.
1

Education and Conferences

The education component is robust, featuring a dedicated weekly didactic session designed to deepen fellows' knowledge in core endocrine topics. Additional learning opportunities include:

  • Monthly Tumor Boards: Offering insights into complex cases alongside a multidisciplinary team.
  • Endocrine Grand Rounds: Weekly discussions that broaden clinical knowledge.
  • Participation in National Conferences: Fellows receive stipends to attend various national and regional seminars.
8

Research Component

The program fosters research through the Scholarly Activity Curriculum, wherein each fellow is matched with a faculty mentor who aligns with the fellow's research interests. Fellow projects are presented in quarterly conferences, contributing to the academic body of knowledge in the field.

9

Opportunities also exist for fellows who wish to pursue advanced degrees, such as a PhD or a Master's in Clinical Research through the STAR program, which emphasizes the integration of clinical and research training.

10

Salary and Benefits

Fellows receive a salary based on PGY levels (typically for PGY 4 and 5 residents). The comprehensive benefits package includes:

  • Vacation: 28 days to be scheduled during non-inpatient rotations.
  • Insurance: Group health and dental insurance for fellows and eligible dependents, along with life, disability, and liability insurance.
11
