UCSF Fresno Medical Education Program

The UCSF Fresno Sleep Medicine Fellowship is a one-year, ACGME-accredited program designed to cultivate future experts in sleep medicine, particularly in an underserved area of Central California. This fellowship offers fellows an opportunity to develop clinical skills in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea, narcolepsy, circadian rhythm disorders, and insomnia, while also gaining proficiency in sleep study interpretation.

The training takes place at multiple esteemed institutions including University Sleep and Pulmonary Associates, Family Health Care Network, Community Regional Medical Center, and the Anther Pediatrics Sleep Center. The program emphasizes multidisciplinary research aimed at improving patient outcomes and healthcare delivery in sleep medicine, fostering an environment that encourages innovative approaches to clinical problems.1

Curriculum

The curriculum of the UCSF Fresno Sleep Medicine Fellowship is meticulously crafted to ensure a well-rounded experience for all fellows. The fellowship includes:

• Outpatient Adult Clinic (50%-60%)
• Research (25%)
• Pediatric Sleep Medicine Clinic (5%-10%)
• Hospital Consults (5-10%)
• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTI) (5%)
• Dental/Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (5%)

Elective experiences are longitudinally structured, allowing fellows to engage in areas such as sleep dentistry, chronic lung clinic, and additional cognitive behavioral therapy sessions. This well-diversified exposure ensures fellows acquire comprehensive skills pertinent to sleep medicine. A commitment to continuous learning is reflected in the various conferences that fellows are required to attend, including Internal Medicine Grand Rounds and focused sleep medicine lectures.3

Fellowship Application Process

The program offers two positions each year for PGY-4 fellows. As part of the selection process, applicants must have completed an accredited residency in internal medicine, family medicine, psychiatry, otolaryngology, or pediatrics, and in many cases, have undertaken additional training in pulmonary or critical care. The application materials required include a curriculum vitae, personal statement, three letters of recommendation, USMLE transcripts, medical school transcripts, and a dean's letter. The application deadline is August 31 each year.2

Visa Support and Requirements

The UCSF Fresno program provides visa support for eligible applicants. International medical graduates must possess an ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) certificate to be considered for residency training in the U.S. The program typically sponsors J-1 visas but does not commonly endorse H-1B visas. As per California state regulations, all trainees must secure a state medical license by a specified time during their fellowship.2
