The UCSF Fresno Hematology and Oncology Fellowship Program offers a comprehensive training experience designed to equip fellows with vital skills in both clinical practice and research. Curriculum Overview

The three-year fellowship structure is divided into a 36-month program, consolidating 18 months of clinical rotations followed by 18 months dedicated to research initiatives. The clinical training provides exposure to diverse medical settings, enhancing fellows' experiences across various facets of patient care, diagnostics, and treatment. Clinical rotations occur at various esteemed facilities, such as the Community Cancer Institute, Veterans Affairs Hospital, and Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.

During clinical service, fellows engage in a variety of specialized rotation areas, including Hematology/Oncology inpatient consults, Ambulatory Care, Hematopathology/Blood Bank, Radiation Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Palliative Care, and Bone Marrow Transplant services at the UCSF main campus. This diversity prepares fellows to manage both common and complex cases in these specialties.

Didactics and Interactive Education

The program emphasizes interactive education through structured didactics sessions every Monday and Friday. These engaging formats include case conferences, journal clubs, morbidity and mortality conferences, and basic science lectures, along with board review sessions tailored for ASCO-SEP and ASH-SAP. Furthermore, fellows benefit from a weekly continuity clinic under close supervision, allowing them to cultivate their interests in specialized patient care.

Opportunities for collaborative learning abound, with fellows expected to participate in and present at various multidisciplinary conferences such as the General Tumor Board and Breast Cancer Tumor Board, offering insight into complex diagnostic and treatment discussions.

Application Process

The fellowship program is highly competitive, attracting numerous applicants each year. Annually, two positions are available for incoming fellows at the PGY-4 level. Notably, applicants must adhere to specific application requirements including submitting through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), providing various supporting documents. Required documents include a personal statement, current CV, three letters of recommendation, medical school transcripts, and USMLE transcripts. For international medical graduates, an ECFMG certificate is also necessary.

Applicants must possess a legal right to work in the United States for the duration of training. This can be achieved through citizenship, permanent residency, or an ECFMG-sponsored J-1 visa. Generally, the program does not sponsor H-1B visas, and candidates are advised to clarify specifics regarding visa support directly with the program.
