Rotations are conducted at various clinical sites including Alameda Health System (Highland Hospital) Oakland, Kaiser Permanente (Oakland, Walnut Creek), San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland. Residents gain exposure to a diverse patient population and clinical scenarios.

Program Director Dr. Emily Miraflor, a general and colon and rectal surgeon, leads the program. The program matches 7 categorical and 9 preliminary residents annually. There are positions for 44 clinical residents and approximately 10 research residents. Residents have the opportunity to engage in research activities, both within the program and outside institutions based on their interests.

The residency curriculum covers various rotations over the five-year program, providing residents with a gradual increase in responsibilities. Research opportunities are a significant focus, with collaborative projects between faculty and residents spanning basic and translational surgical science.

After completion of the PGY III year, residents have the option to pursue basic science and clinical research in well-established surgical laboratories across the United States.
