Training Sites

Fellows engage in clinical training at several distinguished sites including Parkland Memorial Hospital, University Hospitals, Dallas VA Medical Center, and Davita/UTSW Joint Venture Dialysis Unit. Each site presents diverse patient populations and renal pathology experiences. Parkland serves as the cornerstone facility known for its extensive experience with complex medical cases and a significant number of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

The Dallas VA features one of the largest VA dialysis units in the country, offering substantial experience in chronic dialysis management. Meanwhile, the joint venture with Davita concentrates on outpatient dialysis and the management of a large peritoneal dialysis population.

Fellowship Tracks

The structured fellowship offers different tracks, such as Clinical Nephrology, Research Nephrology, Med/Peds Nephrology, and a specialized Transplant Fellowship, catering to diverse career aspirations within the nephrology domain. Each track is designed to meet the unique interests of the fellows while ensuring comprehensive nephrology training.

One particularly notable aspect is the Research Nephrology Track, which combines one year of clinical nephrology training with a commitment ranging from one to three years for research endeavors, supported by NIH T32 training grants.

Application Requirements

UT Southwestern's nephrology fellowship has specific application requirements that include a passing score on all USMLE or COMLEX steps, completion of three years of internal medicine residency training, and the submission of three recommendation letters. The program exclusively accepts U.S. citizens, permanent residents, or J-1 ECFMG sponsored visa holders, and does not sponsor H-1B visas.

International applicants are welcomed but must also hold an ACGME-approved residency. This inclusive approach aims to enrich the fellowship cohort while maintaining rigorous standards necessary for excellence in nephrology practice.
