Pediatrics/Anesthesiology (components individually accredited) - Pittsburgh, PA | ACGME Code: 7264144007 | NRMP Code: 1652726C0

The University of Pittsburgh Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine offers the UPMC Combined Anesthesiology Pediatrics Residency program. This five-year program allows residents to become board-certified in both general pediatrics and general anesthesiology. The program is designed for individuals dedicated to pediatric care who also desire a solid foundation in anesthesiology. Graduates of this combined residency often pursue further training in pediatric anesthesiology, pediatric critical care, pediatric emergency medicine, or pediatric pain medicine, with plentiful career opportunities available.

The leadership of the program includes Program Director Lieu Tran, MD, and Associate Program Director Peter J. Davis, MD, both certified in pediatrics and anesthesiology, along with Associate Director Rhett Lieberman, MD, from the Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Residents in the combined program receive competitive benefits and support, including salary, vacation time, health insurance, and resources from both categorical residencies in Anesthesiology and Pediatrics.

The curriculum of the program involves rotations in general pediatrics, subspecialty experiences, emergency medicine, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, as well as anesthesiology-focused rotations like basic anesthesiology, pediatric anesthesia, and post-anesthesia care. Residents alternate between pediatrics and anesthesiology rotations throughout the program, maintaining continuity clinics and didactic sessions in both specialties.

The application process for the Combined Anesthesiology Pediatrics Residency is through the traditional ERAS system. The program is ACGME accredited and approved by both the American boards of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology for the NRMP match system.
