Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship Program

The Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology (CCEP) Fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center is a two-year program meticulously designed to cultivate an expert understanding and management of a spectrum of cardiac arrhythmias. The program emphasizes clinical care, research, teaching, and leadership, aiming to develop both physicians and physician-scientists who will lead in the field of cardiovascular medicine.

Comprehensive training includes the diagnosis and management of rhythm disturbances, interpretation of electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation procedures, laser lead extraction, and device implantation, such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator systems. The unique structure of the program allows fellows exposure to advanced trial studies and cutting-edge technologies within a robust clinical environment.

Training and Expertise

The Vanderbilt Cardiac Electrophysiology Section is recognized nationally and internationally for its expertise in device extraction, left atrial appendage management, and complex arrhythmia ablation. The program has grown significantly since its inception in 1995, hosting one of the largest clinics in the country, bolstered by the recruitment of eminent faculty.

Fellows will gain competence in both acute and chronic management of arrhythmias, including telemetry data interpretation, use and safety of anti-arrhythmic medications, and device evaluations. The emphasis on research spans basic science to clinical applications, with fellows actively participating in various research projects.

Educational Framework

The program incorporates a robust educational framework, featuring patient-centered discussions and diverse conferences, including didactic sessions and electrogram interpretation. A total of three fellowship slots are available annually, ensuring an intimate learning environment.

Application Requirements

To apply for the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship, candidates must have completed a three-year accredited cardiovascular medicine fellowship prior to starting. Applications are exclusively accepted through the ERAS system, and positions are allocated via the NRMP match.

Visa Support and Competitiveness

The program supports J-1 and H-1B visa applications, offering candidates the necessary immigration assistance. The fellowship is competitive, welcoming applications from both U.S. and international medical graduates, provided they meet the years of training prerequisites.

Special application requirements for the fellowship include two letters of recommendation—one ideally from the program's director, a personal statement, medical school transcripts, and, for international graduates, an ECFMG Status Report.

Rotations and Exposure

Fellows undertake extensive rotations that include clinical and procedural responsibilities, further enhancing their skills, knowledge, and readiness for independent practice in electrophysiology.
