Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), also known as physiatry, is a medical specialty that focuses on enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life to those with physical impairments or disabilities. PM&R physicians, called physiatrists, treat a wide variety of conditions that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. These conditions may arise from injuries, illnesses, or chronic conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, and musculoskeletal disorders.
The goal of PM&R is not only to treat the medical issue but also to improve the patient's ability to function in daily life. Treatment strategies may include physical therapy, medication, assistive devices, and sometimes interventional procedures such as injections to alleviate pain. Physiatrists work in a variety of settings, including inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, outpatient clinics, and long-term care facilities.
They often lead multidisciplinary teams that include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, and social workers to develop comprehensive rehabilitation plans for their patients. PM&R is a holistic field that considers the emotional, social, and psychological aspects of recovery, aiming to help patients achieve the highest possible level of independence and quality of life.
