3251621067The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship at Advocate Children's Hospital, established in 1991, is a comprehensive ACGME-accredited program designed to cultivate the next generation of pediatric cardiologists. This fellowship is integrated within one of the largest pediatric care networks in the nation, in clinical partnership with University of Chicago and NorthShore University Health System. The program spans three years, training individuals to become competent, well-rounded pediatric cardiologists with a strong emphasis on lifelong learning and self-directed study.
The curriculum is robust, encompassing a mixture of clinical service, didactic learning, and research, ensuring fellows receive an extensive clinical exposure to both congenital and acquired heart diseases, as well as hands-on training with pediatric cardiothoracic surgery services.
Curriculum and Rotations
The training program covers the full scope of pediatric cardiology from fetal stages to adulthood. Over the three-year span, the fellowship allocates approximately 24 months to clinical training and 12 months to research initiatives. Fellows engage in a variety of essential rotations, including:
- Inpatient/Consult Services: In the first year, fellows oversee cardiac care for hospitalized patients and provide consultations to various departments such as the neonatal and pediatric ICUs.
- Imaging: Fellows gain proficiency in performing and interpreting echocardiograms, alongside exposure to advanced imaging techniques during the subsequent years.
- Cardiac Catheterization: This rotation allows fellows to practice cardiac catheterization under supervision, enhancing their technical skills.
- Cardiac ICU: Managed by a dedicated team, this 16-bed Pediatric Cardiac ICU provides an immersive experience where fellows manage critically ill patients.
- Electrophysiology: Fellows engage with the spectrum of cardiac rhythm disorders and participate in both diagnostic and therapeutic electrophysiology procedures.
- Research Component: Participation in research is vital, as fellows work on projects mentored by faculty, and are encouraged to present at national conferences.
Training Sites
Advocate Children’s Hospital is regarded as a premier center for pediatric cardiovascular care, with a distinguished team of over 25 pediatric cardiologists and specialized staff. The center's annual volume includes more than 400 cardiac surgeries, 350 cardiac catheterizations, and many electrophysiology procedures, ensuring fellows gain substantial clinical experience during their training years.
Application Process
The fellowship accepts three categorical fellows each year, and candidates are required to submit a comprehensive application package, including:
- Three letters of recommendation (including one from the residency program director),
- Personal statement,
- Medical school transcripts,
- USMLE or COMLEX scores,
- Current state medical licenses,
- Recent photograph,
- ECFMG certificate (if applicable),
- Board certifications or eligibility proof.
Notably, the program can sponsor J1 visas but does not support H1B visa sponsorship. This marks an essential consideration for international applicants intending to join the fellowship. All applications are processed through the ERAS as part of the National Resident Matching Program.
Competitiveness and Special Requirements
The program is competitive, seeking well-qualified candidates, including those from DO and International Medical Graduate (IMG) backgrounds. Candidates who have graduated from medical school no longer than five years ago and have no more than one failed attempt on USMLE or COMLEX exams are more favorably considered. These prerequisites align with the program's commitment to industrious learning and diverse applicant backgrounds.
Conferences and Didactic Training
Throughout the fellowship, participants engage in a variety of conferences and education sessions, including:
- Weekly faculty lectures and case discussions,
- Monthly journal clubs,
- Specialized conferences on pediatric pathology and morbidity/mortality.
This didactic schedule ensures that fellows remain up-to-date on current research and best practices within pediatric cardiology.
