Program Overview

The University of Louisville Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship is an ACGME-accredited three-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in both clinical and research aspects of Pediatric Cardiology. The training structure emphasizes a progressive increase in clinical responsibilities, allowing fellows to gain practical experience and clinical competencies throughout their fellowship.

In the initial year of the program, fellows focus primarily on clinical care. The subsequent years are more flexible, with the opportunity to engage in academic training tailored to individual career goals. Fellowship Mission

The Norton Children's Heart Institute, affiliated with the University of Louisville School of Medicine, serves as the largest heart center in Kentucky, managing a diverse patient population with congenital and acquired heart diseases.

Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in various multicenter collaborations and quality improvement initiatives, further enhancing their clinical training experience through numerous academic networks.

Curriculum and Rotation Structure

The fellowship curriculum is structured to offer a wide range of learning experiences, including core clinical rotations, specialized workshops, and research opportunities. Electives can be pursued in a variety of areas including fetal echocardiography, advanced imaging (MRI and CT), non-invasive electrophysiology, and outpatient outreach rotations.

During the fellowship, all fellows will participate in a continuity clinic one day per week throughout the three years, ensuring consistent patient interactions and continuity of care.

The fellowship provides an enriching educational experience through a combination of conferences, journal clubs, and clinical case reviews. Weekly and monthly conferences cover surgical cases, pediatric cardiology curriculum updates, and topics relevant to current practices in the field, including morbidity and mortality discussions. Optional yet beneficial activities include a pediatric innovation and research advisory team, interdisciplinary discussions, and specialized workshops.
