BronxCare Health System Program
Overview
BronxCare Health System's Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship Program offers a distinctive opportunity for psychiatrists to enhance their expertise in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry, while simultaneously developing educational and leadership skills and pursuing research interests. The program operates within a 964-bed medical center, recognized as the largest not-for-profit health care system in Central and South Bronx, affiliated with the prestigious Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. It serves a medically diverse and ethnically varied patient population, allowing fellows to address psychiatric issues that occur in relation to various medical, surgical, neurological, and obstetrical conditions.
The program's central focus is to equip fellows with the skills to understand and manage both acute and chronic mental illnesses and their ramifications on medical care and patients' quality of life. Fellow engagement in this program prepares them for real-world challenges faced in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry settings.
Curriculum
Composed of 12 months of rigorous training, the fellowship includes five primary clinical rotations accompanied by dedicated research time. The specified rotations are:
- General Inpatient Consultation-Liaison
- Assigned Specialty Inpatient Consultation-Liaison (covering areas such as HIV/AIDS, ICU, Telemetry, CCU, Nephrology, or Obstetrics)
- Elective Specialty Inpatient Consultation-Liaison
- Palliative Care
- Outpatient Primary Care C-L
In addition to these rotations, fellows will also participate in a year-long CL Medicine Continuity Clinic experience aimed at reinforcing their learning.
Clinical and Academic Activities
Each day, fellows engage with new consultation requests and follow-up on previously evaluated patients. They are integrated into a comprehensive didactics program and partake in numerous departmental activities, which include:
- Weekly Case Conferences
- Psychosomatic Medicine Text Review
- Psychosomatic Medicine Journal Club
- Ombudsman Rounds, adopting an interdisciplinary approach
- Lecture Series
- Departmental Grand Rounds
- Hospital Day Presentation
Moreover, fellows are expected to contribute to the education of medical students and psychiatry residents during clinical rounds and other scheduled didactic activities, disseminating knowledge of General Psychiatry and Psychosomatic Medicine. They will work closely with a team of experienced Psychosomatic Medicine Psychiatrists, ensuring abundant guidance and an opportunity for cross-disciplinary learning.
Eligibility and Application Requirements
To apply for the fellowship, candidates must have completed residency training in an ACGME-accredited Psychiatry Residency Training Program. The application process requires three letters of recommendation, including one from the Psychiatry Residency Training Program Director and two from clinical supervisors. Additionally, a completed application form is required, which can be provided upon request. Selected candidates will undergo interviews conducted by Psychosomatic Medicine faculty as part of the evaluation process.
Visa Sponsorship
The BronxCare Health System Program is committed to supporting international medical graduates seeking educational opportunities in the United States. The program provides visa sponsorship for J-1 visas, which are typically used for graduate medical education.
